Lucan forward to 2050

If you are old enough to remember back to 1972? – have the changes to how we lived then and now altered that much?  and will the changes to how we as a society in 2050 have transformed radically from 2011. We all have a stake in our future; many of us will probably be around to see Lucan in 2050. As a country, we face serious threats from economic uncertainty, climate change, inequality, energy security and an ageing population – and, contrary to popular belief, technology won’t solve all our problems. Can culture play a bigger role in our future?  Join us in an evening of discussion at Finnstown House Hotel at 8pm on Wednesday 21st of September. The panel includes:

Stephen Kinsella, PhD :  is a lecturer in Economics at the University of Limerick. Originally from Dublin, and in his early thirties, he has lived and studied in the US before taking up his position in the Kemmy Business School, Limerick. His book Ireland in 2050 published in 2010, began as a newspaper opinion piece in the summer of 2008, which sparked a huge response.

Dermot O’Leary:  is the senior economist at Goodbody Stockbrokers and a native of Lucan, providing a local perspective and an insight into social economics.

Dave O’Connor: Is a Lecturer in Transport and Urban Design at DIT School of Spatial Planning. Facing an uncertain future with reserves of fossil fuels depleting and the need to reduce our carbon emissions how we can adapt our planning and transport demands to reach those targets.

Gavin Kostick:  is Literary Officer at Fishamble the new play company. Gavin works with new writers for theatre through script development, readings and a variety of courses. Gavin is also an award-winning playwright. He has written over a dozen plays which have been produced in Dublin, on tour around Ireland, the UK, New York, Philadelphia and Romania. His most recent works are The End of the Road for Fishamble, This is What we Sang for Kabosh (Belfast and New York), The Sit and Fight Night on tour 2011

John Henry:  former CEO of The Dublin Transport Authority

This is a limited seating event and we would strongly recommend that you book your seat in advance.

Come and join us at this year’s festival

This year we have programmed a very exciting and wide range of events which we hope everyone will enjoy throughout the week. Now in its third year, promises to be even bigger and better than last year, and that would not be possible without a small voluntary committee who work enthusiastically all year round. Our festival volunteers, the support of Lucan Gardaí and the participation of some amazing artists make our festival what it is. Despite the difficult times we all find ourselves in, we are very pleased with both the financial support and positive feedback from local businesses towards this year’s festival. There is a growing awareness within the community of the vital role the festival is playing in making connections.

While Lucan Festival is still in its infancy we see it growing year on year. Preliminary census figures for 2011 show that the population of Lucan has just hit 50,000 and to put that in perspective that’s as large as Waterford city! We believe that the festival has a vital role to play in building connections between the new and old communities of Lucan, developing a real sense of cultural identity and with your continued support of the festival we can achieve that.

We hope you enjoy this year’s events. Tell all your friends and come back next year for more!

It’s your festival: be part of it!

Tom Dowling.

Festival Secretary.

Reflexology has been practised for thousands of years. It is based on the premise that there are zones and reflex areas in the feet and hands that correspond to all glands, organs, parts and systems of the body. Applying pressure to these reflex areas, using the thumb, finger and hand will result in the reduction of stress which promotes physiological changes in the body. 1. Cognitive issues, they way men think about themselves and life in general and what are the thought processes at times of stress.
  2. Do men have emotions? What does it mean to me a man with emotions, what do we do with them?

It could be said that men are prone to “think and do” when they are dealing with problems and life in general, however often the way we think about problems can be part of or even add to the problems themselves.  The traditional man does not wear his heart on his sleeve, emotions are kept at bay, so if these emotions do exist what happens to them at times of stress?  What role models do me have for the “emotional man”?

Lucan Gospel Choir

Sophie Coyle, singer/songwriter to perform at Lucan Festival

Sophie Coyle from Dundalk began writing songs at the age of 12 on a rare ‘two string’ guitar but threw it all away to complete her secondary school studies. All the old 45minute cassette tapes containing her songs have been lost or taped over, such is life.
Sophie’s music could be described as folk-jazz, old-timey feel with quirky lyrics and catchy tunes. Her song `Delirium` has been used for the Credits of `Spiderhole`, a 2010 feature length, Irish made horror film being distributed internationally. She has sung at many well-established Irish venues such as the Spirit Store, the Roisin Dubh, the Cobblestone, the Belltable, and at the Electric Picnic. Sophie recently played support to John Spillane and was also on the line up for this year’s Flat Lakes Festival just gone.

Sophie’s’ influences included Ella Fitzgerald, Hugues Aufrey, Divine Comedy, Madeleine Peyroux, Willie Colon, John Spillane, Joni Mitchell, St. Vincent, Bob Dylan.

The Village stage promises to keep the crowd entertained through the afternoon with the best line up of acts ever seen at one location in Lucan. This is one event you don’t want to miss at its all FREE!

The Gandhis back in Lucan on the Village Stage, September 25th

Lucan Festival are delighted that The Gandhis have confirmed to play The Village Stage on Sunday September 25th. The Gandhis are a Dublin based four-piece, in which writing and singing duties are shared between all four members. They have a unique style and panache in creating a simple yet immediately infectious melody – something that you can sing along to as if you’ve known it all your life. Throw in a neat brass section; some wonderfully arranged harmonies, and a collection of delightfully sunny guitar riffs. The four band members are: Niall Cullen – Bass and Vocal, Conor Deasy – Lead Guitar and Vocal, Aidan McKelvey – Guitar and Vocal, Bazz O’Reilly – Drums and Vocal.

In 2008 they were signed to Dublin label 1969 records, and their debut album ‘You Are My Friend’ was released in October ’09 with a sell-out launch night in Whelans. The band have made national appearances on the likes of RTE’s “Saturday Night With Miriam” and “The Cafe”, Having developed a strong reputation for their energetic live shows, some press comments attributed to The Gandhis include:

“A sweet delight….some of the catchiest pop tunes you’re likely to hear all year” Evening Herald,
“a great night out is always guaranteed at their gigs” News Of The World..
In the recent past they played three support slots with Declan O’Rourke at Dolan’s Warehouse in Limerick, The Róisín Dubh in Galway and The Killarney INEC, Saturday. Gandhis. The guys should have a new single out in early October watch out for that.

Madra the latest act to confirm for The Village Stage

Madra are a rock ‘n’roll band with members from Lucan and Cabinteely. Each member brings their own diverse and unique styles and tastes in music, but it is the guitar driven, drum pounding, bass thumping rock ‘n ‘ roll of the 60′s and 70′s that shines through in our original material. While listening to Madra, one can expect to hear anything from Zepplinesque! Heavy rock to melodic music in the vein of The Beatles to songs, with just a hint of good solid punk like the Ramones or a touch of the alternative, a la Bowie. Recently the band have played at Captain Americas, The Village and the Twisted Pepper.

The band consists of Noel Gleeson – Guitar & Lead Vocals, Darragh Dalton – Drums & Backing Vocals and Mark Phelan on Bass & Vocals.

Check out their music here

Morgan La Faye confirmed for The Village Stage

Local band Morgan La Faye, have had a good year on the Irish music scene appearing at many festivals up and down the country. We are delighted that they will also perform at The Village Stage on Sunday 25th of September.

Morgan La Faye began with Robbie and Derek meeting up and jamming some songs they both had been working. Later Robbie and Derek were joined by bass player Dar O’Brien who gave they guys that deeper thump they needed. The threesome used Dar’s sufficiently sized shed for a few months before they took the show on the road. A combination of fate and the internet delivered to their door a drummer! – Darren Malone this completed the line-up of Morgan La Faye. They guys have been gigging over the past few years at some of the best music venues around the city such as Whelans, The Village, Crawdaddy, and The Mezz.

Earlier this month the guys went into the studio to record their very first single which will released late summer. No strangers to Lucan Festival they also performed at last year’s festival. We look forward to having them back!

Here is one of our favourites ‘The Grass is Greener’

Adela and the Meanits to perform at The Village Stage

Having played solo for a number of years under her own name, Adela Meally was nominated as Best Female at the Balcony TV Awards 07 and was hyped as the “new queen of the local indie scene” by Hot Pres

Adela, played support to John Spillane, Eleanor McEvoy, Liam O Maoinlai, Don Mescall, Gavin Glass, Juliet Turner, Damien Dempsey, Mick Flannery & Arthur Ebeling and also made a video ‘Party for Three’ with the New York Film University. The song has been described as “Sesame Street on craic” and as having “hit written all over it” according to John Creedon of RTE Radio 1.

Comprised of a group of four professional musicians, Adela and the Meanits began as a project in 2009 when they made their debut in the Body and Soul Arena at world famous music and arts festival, Electric Picnic.

After a chance encounter on a St Patrick’s Day float in Portlaoise, Adela met drummer Ros O’ Meara. Then a member of several bands, Ros introduced Adela to Barry Hayes who in turn introduced everyone to John Davidson. Like peas in a far out pod…they became Adela and the Meanits. Their music has been likened to Madness, Sultans of Ping and Lily Allen, but comparisons aside, Adela and the Meanits have an infectious, happy buzz in their sound. Their live shows are a quirky mix of trashcan jazz-meets-pop-meets-folk.

All four musicians (Adela Meally, John Davidson, Ros O’ Meara, Barry Hayes).  are multi-instrumentalists and incorporate vocals, double bass, piano, ukulele, melodica, drums/percussion, nylon string guitar and violin with effects pedals into each live performance. They are now set to release their debut album just in time for this year’s summer festivals. The upcoming studio album has a definite left of centre pop sound.

We are delighted that Adela and the Meanits will perform at The Village Stage Sunday September 25th.
